Verse (quote) Thursday
Thanks to FreeThinker for turning me on to a speech (and several great quotes) by JFK commemorating Robert Frost's passing in '63.

"The men who create power make an indispensable contribution to the nation's greatness. But the men who question power make a contribution just as indispensable, especially when that questioning is disinterested."

-JFK

(The entire speech may be found here: http://www.cc.gatech.edu/people/home/idris/Speeches/kennedy_frost.htm)

I was named after JFK, from my grandmother's love of his short term. Great man.

A very great man, cut down before his time.

What brings you to this neck of the woods? (ie, do I know you? :-))

I'm not sure how I got here. I often travel haphazardly like an aimless walking rockstar.

Power, Poetry and Presidents

You're welcome. I like your quotation but I like it best when coupled with the lines that follow it:

"The men who create power make an indispensable contribution to the nation's greatness. But the men who question power make a contribution just as indispensable, especially when that questioning is disinterested.

For they determine whether we use power or power uses us. Our national strength matters; but the spirit which informs and controls our strength matters just as much."

Rereading the speech just now, my favorite lines are these:

"When power leads man toward arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the arrears of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of his existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses."

A lot in this speech matters, especially now.
